Two Rohingya village hamlets under military raids in Northern Maungdaw

On April 16, 2017, Maungdaw: An estimated 90 military personnel surrounded two hamlets of ‘Laung Don’ village track and have been conducting raids in Northern Maungdaw since today morning.

The military personnel are reported as from nearby battalion 551. They suddenly surrounded the two village hamlets at around 10:00 AM and started raids and randomly arrests of Rohingya men.

“The military personnel dragged women and girls out of their homes and molested in various ways gathering at a place. They robbed their jewelries even some were touched their private parts,” according to an eyewitness.

The witness added, ” We are now in the horrible conditions as they (the military) are threatening us to leave the country. They arrested Abul Kalam (25) s/o U Fedaan and left him free in the afternoon. The reason behind the sudden barbarous actions by the military is still unknown to anyone. And we are again under the terrifying situation.”

As some of the military personnel stationed at Mosque at the Eastern part of ‘Sinthae Lyon’ village hamlet, the villagers are unable to offer the daily compulsory prayers and fearing uncertainty at the forthcoming night.
